It’s easy to forget about yourself. You’ve got deadlines to meet, bills to pay, a home to look after and people in your life to keep happy – these things come first – right?
Wrong.
Looking after our mental and physical health is critical to all of the above. Think about a car with lots of journeys to make, the first thing you do is check the car is in good enough condition to do the work.
It’s the same with each of us.
Why self care is important
If you’re burnt out, stressed, tired and doing everything but the things you want to do, you are not in the best shape. You won’t make good decisions, perform at your best, feel happy or in lots of cases, be that appealing to be around.
If you’re not looking after your health, you won’t realise your body is functioning on empty until something goes majorly wrong. What you will feel is a sense of something missing.
The happiness and fulfilment we chase so hard doesn’t come from money, objects or people - it comes from balance. If we’re meeting every need except for our own, we will never feel truly happy.
That’s why self care is important. If we want to get the most out of ourselves, life and others we have to make some time to look after ourselves.
So how to achieve when you are already so busy? Isn’t this just adding to your stress?
For some reason, we feel self care needs to be a big gesture – it doesn’t.
You don’t need to take a trip to a spa or a luxe yoga retreat in the sun to look after your mental and physical health. Self care is something you can do everyday with little or no expense.
Here are 5 easy ways to build self care into your day:
1. Pause: As adults we rarely stop.
Stopping to take a quiet moment to breathe, pause and either reflect or empty our minds for 10, 15, 20 minutes, can change our entire perspective.
First thing in the morning, last thing at night or lunchtimes are natural breaks in the day when it is easy to take a few minutes to yourself. You might choose to do yoga when you first wake up or before you go to bed.
Or you might decide to complete a gratitude journal, meditate, read a book, go for a run, take a quiet walk outside or practice mindfulness.
Whatever you choose to do, this quiet reflective time on your own can help to calm your body, ease stress, increase you focus, boost motivation and induce a greater sense of happiness.
2. Think: We are so great at thinking about what everyone else wants. We give great gifts, we’re great friends, partners – to everyone except ourselves.
Give yourself permission to think about yourself.
What do you need to be happy? What are the dreams you have for your life and how can you make them happen?
Regret is about dreams left unfulfilled so make sure some of your energy each day is used to work towards your next goal. Don’t be so busy with everyone else’s dreams that you realise too late, you’ve left all yours untouched.
3. Treat: And that starts with treats for yourself. You’d always encourage anyone else to treat themselves but do you ever do anything nice for yourself?
It doesn’t have to be expensive. A simple pampering face mask, beauty treatment or deep bubble bath at the end of the day is an ideal way to practice self care without any hassle.
4. Energy: Our body is more than just skin and bones- it’s a machine. If you want your mind and body to operate at their best, you have to keep your engine running on the right fuel.
That means eating balanced, nutritious foods throughout the day, making time to do some sort of exercise daily, drinking plenty of water and getting 6-8 hours of sleep every day.
5. Joy: Last but not least joy. This may sound a little touchy- feely but its not. Adults need to have joy in their lives too.
Now this isn’t doing what other people say is fun. This is fulfilling your innate need for inner joy and that is completely personal to you.
For some people, that’s as simple as some time alone, for others it’s baking, writing, drawing, swimming, giving yourself a full mani, making things, looking after animals, hugs – that thing that makes your heart leap -do it .
Do it often so you have a life you love.
